In a country as culturally and scenically rich as Indonesia, the Javanese city of Yogyakarta is unique. • Long a bellwether of Indonesian arts and culture, Yogyakarta is the capital of the sultanate that was an independent kingdom for centuries and remains a semi-autonomous region under the rulership of a sultan. • It has a laid-back, set-apart vibe, a proud history and, as with other cities in Indonesia, a welcoming attitude toward visitors.
