Dynamite Dan ZX Spectrum 1985

This is a pretty important video! As far as I know this is the only legit completion of ZX Spectrum Dynamite Dan on the internet. I don't use rollback, infinite lives or any other POKEs which all other videos use. I do start the game from a save state (right at the start with Dan in the blimp) so the collectables are in defined places and I've planned a route and practiced -- boy have I practiced! -- based on those locations. (the game randomises the object locations each time you play). • So does that count as cheating? Starting the game as intended you would have no idea where the dynamite sticks are and would just wander round getting killed. The mansion is very hostile so you really need to know where to go. This gives the game its fearsome reputation but if you set a save state you can learn to complete it though it is still crazy hard. In fact the objects in the game (dynamite, test tubes, oxygen) are laid out in one of 64 different configurations based on a random seed from 0..63 (essentially the first evaluation of the Z80 Refresh register, R, with the top two bits not used). My layout is for the seed set at 38. If you want to play the game with my layout, I can send you my savestate. Alternatively with a fancy emulator you can set a breakpoint at $F3A4 and set the R value to 38 when that breakpoint is hit (ask me if you want to do this, it's technical!) • Dynamite Dan is an amazing game with large colourful and detailed graphics, smooth movement and pixel perfect collision detection. But what's most impressive is the sound: full multi channel sound from the 48k beeper? I didn't even think that was possible! The game is rock hard but rather fair in that you get lots of lives and extra lives (test tubes). In addition once a baddy kills you it disappears permanently so you can take a death strategically. Also you get the deodorant which can be used for 30 seconds to kill baddies permanently. I use all these techniques in the run. There are also two oxygen bottles. Once you have these you can fall in the water at the bottom and end up back in the blimp (if you fall in the water without oxygen it's instant game over). I collect and use both oxygens in this run as it helps my route. • The game has immense depth and detail and it's incredible it fits into 48k. But it suffered due to its reputation for being impossible. On reflection the random object location was perhaps not a good idea as the fun of games like Jet Set Willy is planning a route. I might try other layouts rather than R=38: some will be easier and some harder -- or even impossible. Effectively it's 64 games in one but not sure I have the energy to persist more! • Note on the run: at 9:40 I completely screw up and fall through a baddy into the water losing 2 lives unnecessarily. I should have gone to the next screen on the right where it is easy to get in the water safely and hence back to the blimp. • Played on Speccy emulator and recorded live on OBS.
