The film “Lady of Heaven” is an epic historical drama on the life of the Prophet Muhammad's (saw) daughter, Fatima Al-Zahra (s.a) pursuant to the Shia Muslim narrative. • As it has generated considerable discussion across various social media platforms upon its UK release the @BayatAlGhadeer team decided to attend a screening and gauge the views of fellow attendees. Its release courted a considerable amount of controversy, with opponents of the film organising protests outside those cinemas screening it. Certain faith leaders from the Sunni Muslim community have sought to incite their adherents with allegations that the films depiction of the Prophet (saw) and certain companions was blasphemous. • These opinions are based purely on hearsay. • There is nothing blasphemous towards the Prophet (saw) of Islam in the film, rather the problem is those that are suggesting it is, are equating a negative portrayal of those personalities they deem as companions with that of the Prophet. Drawing a nexus between the companions and the Prophet (s) to prove blasphemy is without any basis in the Qur’an and Sunnah. • No religious group has the right to impose or implement their beliefs on others. Similarly, those that demand the movie be banned from UK cinemas cannot insist that Shias should submit and accept their world view on this issue. The United Kingdom is a democratic country that prides itself on freedom of expression, we can hold and express unpopular opinions, including opinions which might upset the sentiments of others. • • If the film portrays certain prominent figures that that they revere in a negative manner, why should Shia Muslims be prevented from presenting that narrative or even watching the film? • People are free to utilise whatever platforms they want, to respond to the content. • #LADYOFHEAVEN • The Prophet Muhammad (saw) is regularly blasphemed by ex-Muslims, atheists, and Christians, as a charlatan and a paedophile not to mention a Netflix series portraying Prophet Jesus as a homosexual. Despite this, the vocal group laying siege to cinemas do not bat an eye lid when such blasphemy occurs. It seems that their sensibilities are only awakened by the negative portrayal of certain figures they consider even more sacred that two Ulil Azm Prophets! This is idolistic behaviour, the objective is simply to hinder the opportunity to understand the Shia narrative and hide this shameful period of Islamic history from their adherents. • When the Passion of the Christ came out, director Mel Gibson faced a similar type of backlash from the Jewish community who accused him of Anti Semitism. His response was he was presenting the Christian narrative. Did these objections prevent the Christian community from watching this movie or did the films distributors or cinema chains ban it as it upset the sentiments of the Jewish community? • Imagine how absurd it would be if white people pushed for a ban on the movie “Django Unchained” as its take on the US black slave trade portrayed them as vile, debauched racists. • Our opponents should be reminded they are living in the UK and should respect the rights and freedoms that the UK has granted all its citizens. Instead of behaving like intolerant zealots to get their way.
