The ITANIUM, aptly dubbed the ITANIC , sank to crush depth in the chasm of VLIW (Very Long Instruction Word) architectures. The ITANIUM compilers were incapable of porting any significant amount of existing enterprise software to the new platform thereby rendering ITANIUM incompatible with the entirety of the X86 marketplace...enterprise or otherwise. The industry refused to embrace ITANIUM in spite of HUGE amounts of astroturfing 'incentive' $$$cash$$$. • Toxic Hubris • Intel and HP executive teams missed an almost 'instinctive' level of comprehension of the x86 marketplace but then perhaps ITANIUM was always merely a technology demonstration. The associated nerds had little or no understanding of the narrow set of algorithms that can actually take advantage of VLIW. Again a serious management disconnect and poorly defined target. Regardless, ITANIUM was of no value to Intel or HP stockholders. Court case in 2012 revealed HP was paying Intel 690 Million to keep ITANIUM on life support(wiki). The 'project' was finally unplugged in 2021 with estimates of several $$$Billion$$$ being 'put to sleep'...in development and lost opportunity costs. November(2023): Support for Itanium is finally removed from the Linux kernel source code.
