The 19th century saw Chicago go from a patch of wilderness on the American frontier, to a metropolis of over 1.6 million inhabitants. Although impressive, this rapid growth would prove problematic for the city, as it struggled to provide adequate infrastructure and public space. To adress this, local architect Daniel Burnham was asked to create a comprehensive plan for Chicago's development.
