(28 May 1999) Serbo-Croat/Nat • • NATO has bombed a residential area in the southern Serbian town of Aleksinac, killing two people and wounding four. • • The bombed neighbourhood lies in ruins. • • Belgrade is also still struggling with electricity cuts as NATO continues to target power stations in the Yugoslavian capital. • • Two people were killed and four wounded when NATO bombed a residential area in the southern Serbian town of Aleksinac early on Friday morning. • • The attack left a number of houses in ruin. • • Residents recounted their near escapes, hiding in the basements of friends and residents. • • SOUNDBITE: (Serbo-Croat) • We have managed to escape the worst. We went up to the house foundation and we found a shelter there. Ten seconds were decisive. Everything was destroyed. • SUPER CAPTION: Dobrila Zivkovic, Bombing victim • • While some residents gazed in horror, others began to clear away the dust and see what they could salvage. • • Work began immediately to restore some homes. • • One survivor said his grandmother had survived the bombing, although her house was destroyed. • • He said his grandmother's neighbour had not been so lucky. • • SOUNDBITE: (English) • We saw these two houses ripped apart. One was totally destroyed. They knew one man was in the house. They pulled him out this morning.
