Have to ever wondered about trying to replace or fix trailer brakes for your horse, boat or other type of trailer? They are all basically the same. Drum brakes are standard for these types of trailers. You may not have been sure how hard, or easy it might be to learn how to change electric brakes yourself. Is it just a matter of changing the brake shoes? It's not that simple, but not hard at all. This video will answer most, if not all of your questions on how to change brake shoes. • First of all, you will need to replace the magnet in your electric trailer brakes when you go to replace the brake shoes. This video will show how to change electric drum brakes on a Sundowner horse trailer with Dexter axles using a 3000 lb. brake assembly. Electric brakes and electric brake controllers are all pretty much the same on different types of trailers since the function is universal in general applications. After pricing the new brake shoes, magnets and drums, I found it was cheaper, or not much more, to buy the electric brake assembly as a preassembled unit. Buying this way makes everything so much easier and definitely quicker as you won't be fighting with springs, clips and internal wiring. I bought this Sundowner horse trailer used and put quite a bit of mileage on it, so I decided since I had it apart, to replace all moving parts. The wheel bearings were probably fine and just needed cleaning and repacking, but since I am hauling horses, I decided change the bearings out while I had it apart just to be on the safe side. I replaced the hub/drum with new wheel bearings, bearing cones and cups along with new grease seals. I didn't show the wire reconnection since I figured if you were going to take this project on yourself, then you probably has some mechanical experience and figured the wiring was pretty simple part of this brake replacement. I will tell you that I used a wire nut and sealed it with hot glue or liquid tape to waterproof the connection since this area get lots of exposure to the elements. In another video, on this channel    / how2auto   , I will demonstrate how to adjust the brake tension so you get proper braking on all wheels. This trailer has 2 axels, so obviously that's 4 wheels that need to be adjusted to get even brake shoe wear and stable braking. • I have been asked, Where the best place to get good electric trailer brakes and trailer brake parts? and I was very happy with the service and great prices at Trailer Parts Superstore at http://www.easternmarine.com . This is an unsolicited endorsement. I love to give good business who treat me well, a shout out. I also plan on doing a video on how electric brakes work. Please subscribe, like and leave your comments. I would love to know if I have helped at least on one person with my demos. Thanks for watching this video on how to change electric brakes.
