The area presents a variety of collections and invaluable artifacts from the Roman city of Lugdunum, which was established in 43 B.C in the exact same place – on the slopes of Fourvière Hill. • The Roman Museum • November 1975 – that’s when the Roman museum of Lyon first opened its doors and started exhibiting some of the most exceptional archaeological discoveries in France. The 4,000-square-meter space displays all the aspects of public and private life in the Roman empire. It perfectly depicts the story of Lyon’s first settlers in the Roman period – their domestic belongings, war and army symbols, religious artifacts, currencies, and urban designs. • When visiting the Museum, you can choose between a self-guided audio tour, a professional thematic guide, or a specially designed children’s workshop on Roman culture. • The Roman Theatres of Lugdunum • The theater area of Lugdunumin corporates the large Roman theater and the smaller odeon, which were classified as Historical Monuments back in 1905. • The large majestic theater (108 meters in diameter) is officially the earliest one in Roman Gaul and among the biggest ones, with a current capacity of 10,000 seats. • The odeon, on the other hand, can hold up to 3,000 spectators. It was primarily designed for traditional concerts and declamations and is well-preserved nowadays as a part of the spectacular archaeological complex of Lyon.This Roman Theater was listed as a Historical Monument in 1905. • The Great Theatre, the oldest in France, built by Augustus in 15 BC and divided into 3 sections: • 1. The cavea (a vast shell with 25 stands leading to the pit) built on a gallery. In bad weather, a velum (awning) was stretched over the cavea , tied to the backstage wall. The cavea had several vomitorias (doors leading to the stands). The balteus was the wall separating the Plebs from the Patricians. Finally the semi-circular pit was the most ornate part with multi-coloured geometric patterns. This was where the choir, dancers and actors performed. It is 27 m in diameter. • In the theatre's stands, blocks of white limestone give us an idea of what the monument originally looked like. • 2. The stage supported by a wall, the pulpitum , has been fitted with floorboards to allow use of the theatre today. It is decorated with a few columns and the statue of a woman. Each column was there to commemorate an emperor, with his ashes stored in the base. The theatre was dedicated to tragedies and comedies. It could hold up to 4,700 people. It was extended under Hadrian's rule to 10,700 seats in 120 AD. • 3. The Odeon, the smaller theatre (3,000 seats) was for political or philosophical orators, music, poets and an intellectual elite. Odeons had a small seating capacity. The one in Lugdunum could only seat 2,500 people.
