Hope it makes you happy. • Sappy is a weird case. It was recorded four times: from the mournful and slow home solo recording by Kurt in circa 1987 to the most know version engineered by Steve Albini during the In Utero sessions in February 1993. It was included in the live set in autumn 1989 and lasted until the Milano show on February 25, 1994. During the years Kurt never gave up on the song, trying it again and again. It's a perfect Nirvana song, at least in the latest editions. Typical Cobain melody, classic Nirvana delivery, add more Nirvana to it and it becomes a self-parody. It could have ended on both Nevermind and In Utero but didn't make it even to Incesticide . • The song went through some significant evolutions. Music, lyrics, composition, delivery – everything was tried in different ways at some point. Even the title. Originally called Sad , it became Sappy later. Then it was renamed as Verse Chorus Verse which was also the name of another abandoned song and the second working title for In Utero after I Hate Myself And Want To Die was aborted. As Verse Chorus Verse the song was released as a hidden track on the AIDS-benefit compilation album, No Alternative , in October 1993. But to avoid confusion the song is normally called by it's older name, Sappy . • As a Nirvana release, Sappy appeared for the first time in With The Lights Out box-set (2004). It's the same version from No Alternative and the one I use in the video. In 2013, it was released as a part of In Utero deluxe edition finally making it's way into a Nirvana album in a certain sense. • Despite all the changes, the one thing remained the same: bassline. According to Krist as quoted in Gillian G.
