Domestic violence and abuse is a wide range of behaviors, controls, manipulations and punishments that happen at home, but not out with friends. Coercive control is perhaps the most damaging extreme of emotional abuse, which can also often extend to physical violence. • So what is emotional abuse in a relationship? • It's belittling and demeaning, it's name-calling and blaming, it's shaming and guilting. It's control and isolation, it's confinement and deprivation. It's undermining your sense of self, your sense of what's right and wrong, it's gaslighting and hoovering, it's love-bombing and flooding. It's all the scary, horrible things you see in movies that you don't want to admit might be true in your relationship - with a partner, parent, ex, sibling... • Today, think about all these ways a person can be involved in domestic abuse. Are they happening to you??! • Domestic violence is not limited to physical abuse. It is much more than the US government now acknowledges since Trump quietly changed the definition on the Office of Violence Against Women website (and yes, this applies to male victims, too): • Original from April 2018 defined domestic violence as: • A pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner. Domestic violence can be physical, sexual, emotional, economic, or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person. This includes any behaviors that intimidate, manipulate, humiliate, isolate, frighten, terrorize, coerce, threaten, blame, hurt, injure, or wound someone. • Current version: (still as of March 3, 2020) • The term “domestic violence” includes felony or misdemeanor crimes of violence committed by a current or former spouse or intimate partner of the victim, by a person with whom the victim shares a child in common, by a person who is cohabitating with or has cohabitated with the victim as a spouse or intimate partner, by a person similarly situated to a spouse of the victim under the domestic or family violence laws of the jurisdiction receiving grant monies, or by any other person against an adult or youth victim who is protected from that person’s acts under the domestic or family violence laws of the jurisdiction. • https://www.justice.gov/ovw/domestic-... • * Always remember, narcissists and other toxic people come in all genders and ages * * • and toxic relationships can be at home, at work, at play... from your parent, boss, spouse, sibling, friend, co-worker. • ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ • I am Dr. Rhoberta Shaler, The Relationship Help Doctor. • Looking for relief from the pain, confusion and drama of toxic relationships?
