Full length movie featuring singer/actress, Laura Branigan. Laura Branigan plays Kate Lawrence, an American pop singer who wants to act, as well as sing. The only job her agent/manager can find is an English play The Green Year Passes , being put on by an Australian theatre. Conflict... everywhere. An American singer instead of an Australian actress, an English production being played in Australia and an affair with a critic who is notoriously acidic in his reviews. The filming of Backstage was also full of conflict. It was written and directed by Academy Award nominee Jonathan Hardy. The production company, Boulevard Films, lead by Frank Howson (Who approached and convinced Laura to do the film) couldn't secure financing. At the time, financing came from the Australian government. The Burrowes Film Group joined the project. Soon, conflict between Burrowes and Howson muddied up the production. Burrowes, initially thought to have limited creative control, decided they wanted more. Howson stated, I knew very clearly what audience it should be made for, said Howson, but all of a sudden I found myself dealing with production by committee. To even make the smallest decision required everyone sitting around the • table. • Things got so bad, during production, Burrowes bought Boulevard out of the film. The movie was to be a fun, witty love story, but it was hijacked by a group with a different vision and motivation. (Much like every facet of Laura's career) In the end, the Burrowes Film Group just needed a quick film to complete before years end, to raise it's budget for the next year. • Backstage was wrapped with quick, sloppy editing (you can see the boom in some scenes, and delivery of actor's lines were often shot and printed, first time through) and briefly released theatrically in Australia, then straight to home video. • This was Laura Branigan's Xanadu, with no thought to support it with a great soundtrack. • Filming began March 7, 1986. •   / laurabraniganforever   • ***I do not own any part of this video.
