When it comes to Scotch, is older whisky better? • This is the Glennallachie 15 year old Single Malt Scotch, which is essentially the older brother whiskey to the Glenallachie 12, which is their entry level scotch. It’s a Speyside scotch, so it should be lighter and softer than something like an Islay, but hopefully it’s full of flavour! • Billy Walker, Glenallachie’s head distiller, revitalised the brand a few years back and really focussed on improving their cask programme and it shows in their whiskeys. They don’t give a lot of information about the casks used in the maturation, and while there is some speculation online that there is some red wine influence, but they just say that they are highlighting the influence of sherry casks. • I suspect that the cask programme for the Glenallachie fifteen is similar to the Glenallachie twelve, with first and second fill bourbon, virgin oak, oloroso sherry and PX sherry casks being used, but with a longer finishing time to impart more flavour. It is non-chill filtered, natural colour and comes in at 46% ABV. • So, let’s dive into it, and try it out! • Glenallachie 15 year old tasting notes: • Nose: • There’ s a lot of sherried malt up front, with raisins, plums and maple syrup on top of a layer of oak spice, citrus peel and a touch of minerality • Palate: • The palate is oaky and sherry forward, with a lot of dark fruits, and spices, it’s not a gentle arrival, but also not harsh. On the second sip, I got more syrupy notes, with wine tannins, cinnamon, clove and black pepper. • Finish: • The finish is medium short, with the syrupy notes fading quite quickly, leaving the spicy notes to linger on • Overall, I really liked this whiskey, it felt like the 12 year old, but just pushed a little more with the cask influence, but not so much that the core nature of the single malt was lost behind the casks. Definitely a great little whiskey, and very easy to enjoy. • • ------------------------------------------------------- • I'm a total whiskey nerd and this channel is all about Whiskey, Whisky, Bourbon, Rye, Pot Still Whiskey and Single Malt Whiskey. I also love making cocktails, especially whiskey cocktails (or whisky cocktails) and really enjoy taking a classic recipe and adding my own twist to it, or making simple, 3 ingredient cocktails • Make sure to subscribe for reviews every Wednesday and cocktail recipes every Friday! • https://www.youtube.com/channel/TheWh... • If you want, you can also check out my instagram at: •   / the.whiskey.nerd   • #Whiskey #whisky #scotch • • 0:00 - Intro • 0:26 - Whiskey Info • 3:06 - Nose • 5:35 - Palate • 7:07 - Finish • 8:17 - Wrap-up
