How to Register for GST Online in Australia 2018 • This is an easy and quick option to register for GST direct to the ATO through a registered tax agent. But before you start, make sure to check if you actually need to register. Check out our channel for videos that will discuss all the requirements you need to know to determine if you’re actually eligible to register to GST. Once confirmed, proceed to the steps on how to register for GST. • 1. Go to https://www.gstregister.com.au/. • You can register yourself or you can contact them if you have any questions. They’ll be able to assist you and make sure you’re doing it correctly. You can also go directly to the ATO website, but you will need an auskey to access the business portal. • 2. Click on the yellow box that says Click to Begin Registration. • Enter your ABN and select your business structure. • The ABN Lookup is a really great tool to get some more information about your ABN. It’s very simple, go to abr.business.gov.au, type in the business name that you want to look up and then bring up the details on this ABN. It can take up to 48 hours for the ATO to update the ABR record once you finished completing your GST registration. • 3. Enter your contact details. • Full name, your gender, date of birth, your mobile number and your email address. • 4. Enter your GST details. • Estimated turnover is your total revenue or total sales figure. This is important, just for ATO reporting purposes. It won’t actually change the result of how you do your GST, unless you’re over a certain figure. The figure you put in here will dictate whether or not you are eligible for annual or quarterly GST reporting. If you’re over $75,000 you will not be eligible for annual reporting. • 5. When will you send the GST results to the ATO. • This is a very important part of the registration. You need to decide between cash method or when you receive the cash and accrual method or when you issue the invoice. Generally speaking, if you’re a small business, it is recommended to select the cash method. This means you’ll only be reporting the GST when you pay for something or when you receive payment. It is the most common and easiest option for most small businesses. • 6. How often would you like to report to the ATO. • Monthly, quarterly or annually. If your turnover is less than $75,000, you can opt for the annual return which will mean that you pay your GST at the end of the financial year. You can also choose quarterly or monthly. The most common however is the quarterly option. • 7. Start date for registration. • Select your start date. You can actually back date this if you wish. • 8. Import declaration. • Indicate whether or not you import goods and services into Australia. • 9. PAYG Option • GST Register does have an option to register you for PAYG or pay-as-you-go withholding tax. Answer the first question whether your business has employees with YES if you do and wish to avail of the additional service. Additional questions will appear. Answer with the date you started or will start paying wages, the number of employees you estimate you will pay and the estimated amount you expect to withhold from payments to pays each year. For example, on a $60,000 annual wage, withholding taxes is roughly $11,000. • Select the main industry that you operate in and describe the new main activity from which you derive the majority of your business income.
