Around that same time, the movie Tommy came out and, while I did not get to see the movie, I heard lurid descriptions of it from a friend who had. I managed to get my hands on the soundtrack and became immediately enthralled by that. I think the whole concept album concept really agreed with me, perhaps setting the table for 2112 and Hemispheres in the not so distant future. This was shortly before I started playing, but, even then, I could pick out and was oddly attracted to the awesome bass-lines. Oddly enough, The Who themselves don't play very much at all on the soundtrack beside the vocals and maybe some odd parts here and there. Some of the best session players of the time were brought in to record the album. • This was my first exposure to The Who and I remember being wholly disappointed when I finally heard the The Who's album Tommy. What's with all that acoustic guitar? I did get around to seeing the movie some 15 years later and while it was nice to see some movement put to the music I knew so well (up to that point the movie was in my head based on listening to the soundtrack and poring over the still pictures that came with the album), I'm not sure the movie aged very gracefully...that is, except for Elton John's character - The Pinball Wizard. • In this version, there's a perfect spot for starting a conga line and a not so subtle nod to I Can't Explain during the outré. • This is me, channeling Dee Murray, who is channeling John Entwistle.
