A covenant is kind of like a contract, but more than a contract. It's a deal between two groups or a person and a group or two people that brings about a relationship of commitment. • But really, the best way to explain what a covenant is is to see how it's used. • After Adam and Eve sinned, those subsequent generations after them fell into a proverbial pit of sin. If what Adam and Eve did was bad, their children and children's children took it to a whole new level. • Maybe you know the story of Noah and the flood? If you haven't, as the story goes, it got so bad that God basically wiped the earth clean with a flood and kind of started over with one man, Noah, his wife, and his three sons with their wives. And when He did that, after the flood, He made a covenant with them - a kind of contract. • For His part, He promised never to send another flood to devastate humanity. • He gave humanity permission to eat meat - which before then, according to the Bible, was not allowed. • But on the part of Noah and his descendants, He told them to have lots of kids and multiply on the earth. He also basically said that people were not allowed to kill each other and if they did, their own blood would be shed. • The Catholic church teaches that this covenant actually applied to every non-Jewish person on the planet right up until Jesus came and gave the world a new covenant. And the Bible, though it is, in essence, a distinctly Jewish document, does honor a few non-Jewish people during those generations as being particularly faithful to God even though they didn't follow all the different laws the Jews were required to follow.
