Whereas his predecessor had been hated for his attempts to sell out Bavaria, his wastefulness and for his reactionary policies, Maximilian Joseph would vehemently defend his country’s sovereignty and try to reform it into an efficient and liberal state. Trapped between the French and Austrians he was soon dragged in to the Napoleonic wars and would for a long time be the most faithful of Napoleon's German allies.
