There is not enough capacity in today’s endocrinology community to meet the growing needs of the diabetes population. In 2022 there were 12 million+ Medicare beneficiaries with diabetes, but less than 1,000,000 of them saw an endocrinologist; the median time to the next appointment is 3+ months; and retirements outpace new fellows. This is a huge and underappreciated problem. Our analysis shows that when people with diabetes are consistently cared for by an endocrinologist they do better, which means healthier lives, fewer ER visits and hospitalizations, and $3,500 less healthcare spending annually. This dynamic is a breakdown in the supply and demand rules of economics - endocrinologists create significant human financial value, there is growing demand for their services, but supply is shrinking. This market is broken because we pay endocrinologists wrong - despite delivering great care and creating significant value, endocrinologists are among the lowest paid specialists in the US.
