Metered-dose inhaler with spacer demonstration for nursing students and nurses. Learn how to use a metered-dose inhaler (MDI) with a spacer. • What is metered-dose inhaler (MDI)? It’s an inhaler used to administer a set amount of medication into the lungs like bronchodilators, corticosteroids etc. • It is important to teach the patient proper technique when using MDIs, so the medication enters the lungs rather than collecting in the mouth. • It is best to administer a metered-dose inhaler with a spacer. This will ensure the medication enters the lungs and doesn’t stay in the mouth because some of these medications are irritating to the mouth (like corticosteroids). • If a spacer is not used, the open-mouth or closed-mouth technique can be used (these techniques were demonstrated in the previous video). Always teach the patient to use the method prescribed by the physician. • The spacer makes administering a metered-dose inhaler easier in that the patient doesn’t have to have perfect timing with pressing down the inhaler and breathing in at the same time (as with the other techniques). • When using a spacer with a MDI, the medication enters this chamber and allows the patient time to inhale, and this will help decrease the amount of medication left in the mouth. • Notes: http://www.registerednursern.com/mete... • Facebook: / registerednurserns • Instagram: / registerednursern_com • Subscribe: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_c... • Nursing School Supplies: http://www.registerednursern.com/the-... • Popular Playlists: • NCLEX Reviews: • NCLEX Study Strategies • Fluid Electrolytes: • Fluid and Electrolytes Nursing • Nursing Skills: • Nursing Skills Videos • Nursing School Study Tips: • Nursing School Study Tips • Nursing School Tips Questions • Nursing School Tips Questions • Teaching Tutorials: • Teaching Tutorials • Types of Nursing Specialties: • Types of Nursing Specialties • Healthcare Salary Information: • Healthcare Salary Information • New Nurse Tips: • New Nurse Tips • Nursing Career Help: • Nursing Career Help • EKG Teaching Tutorials: • EKG/ECG Interpretation • Dosage Calculations for Nurses: • Dosage Calculations Nursing • Diabetes Health Managment: • Diabetes Health Managment
