A quick before/after comparison of Dimarzio's Area '61 and Fender's Texas Special pickups in the neck position. The Fender Texas Special set is a very well regarded conventional singlecoil voiced for the bright, slightly overwound sound Stevie Ray Vaughan was associated with, while the Area '61 is Dimarzio's take on the same sound in a Virtual Vintage noiseless pickup. • • The Area '61 begins clean at 0:08, and distorted at 0:40. The Texas Special begins clean at 1:28, and distorted at 2:17. • • This was recorded with a SM57 maybe 3/4 off the cab of my Mesa Roadster. The clean settings were Master at 3, Presence at 11, Bass at 10, Mids at noon, Treble at noon, Gain at 1, in Clean mode on the first channel. Distortion settings were Master at noon, Presence at 9, Bass at 8, Mids at 2, Treble at 10, and gain at noon. Both channels were in 100 watt mode with 6L6s, and nothing was in the loop. Post processing was limited to a light reverb and normalizing the finished output.
