i was walking through Broadwater Parklands in Southport, Gold Coast, Queensland when I spotted this family of curlews nesting amongst the bushed. I filmed them over 7 days. • The Bush Stone-curlew, or Bush Thick-knee, is a large, slim, mainly nocturnal, ground-dwelling bird. It is mostly grey-brown above, streaked with black and rufous. It is whitish below with clear, vertical black streaks. The bill is small and black, and the eye is large and yellow, with a prominent white eyebrow. Both sexes are similar. Young Bush Stone-curlews are similar in appearance to the adults, but are paler, and a little browner in colour. Bush Stone-curlews are nocturnal birds (night birds), doing all their feeding and other activities at night. • The bush stone-curlew is a large (55–60 cm wingspan), ground-dwelling bird endemic to Australia. • During the day, bush stone-curlews tend to remain inactive, sheltering amongst tall grass or low shrubs and relying on their cryptic plumage to protect them from predators. When disturbed, they freeze motionless, often in odd-looking postures. • Curlews are mainly nocturnal and specialises in hunting small grassland animals: frogs, spiders, insects, molluscs, crustaceans, snakes, lizards and small mammals are all taken. They usually forage individually or in pairs over a large home range, particularly on moonlit nights. • • Music: http://www.purple-planet.com • Music: http://www.bensound.com • Music: • 1.
