It contains most of the thoracic organs, and acts as a conduit for structures traversing the thorax on their way into the abdomen. • Anatomically, the mediastinum is divided into two parts by an imaginary line that runs from the sternal angle . (the angle formed by the junction of the sternal body and manubrium) to the T4 vertebrae: • Superior mediastinum – extends upwards, terminating at the superior thoracic aperture. Borders: first rib (superior) - T4 (inferior) • Inferior mediastinum – extends downwards, terminating at the diaphragm. It is further subdivided into the anterior mediastinum, middle mediastinum and posterior mediastinum. • In this video we shall look at the contents of mediastinums and their mnemonics. • To start with the superior mediastinum . The contents include brachiocephalic veins . Arch of aorta . Thymus . Superior vena cava . Trachea . Esophagus . Nerves (vagus phrenic) . And thoracic duct . So by using their first letters we can make a mnemonic . BATS TENT . BATS TENT. • As the inferior mediastinum is subdivided into anterior , middle and posterior mediastinum . I choose to start with the contents of posterior mediastinum which are descending aorta . Azygous vein . Thoracic duct . Esophagus . Sympathetic trunk / ganglia . Hemiazygous vein . Accessory hemiazygous vein . Vagus nerve . By using their first letters we can make a mnemonic that DATES HAV. DATES HAV . • Middle inferior mediastinum. • Borders: T4 (superior) - T9 (inferior); anterior aspect of pericardium (anterior) - posterior aspect of pericardium . • Content: phrenic nerve . heart . pericardium . ascending aorta . pulmonary trunk. superior vena cava . pericardiacophrenic artery. • Anterior inferior mediastinum . • Borders: T4 (superior) - T9 (inferior); sternum (anterior) - pericardium (posterior) • Content: remnants of the thymus . lymph nodes .
