Scottish physician James Lind's 1740s treatment scurvy-ridden sailors is reproduced here. Called the first ever clinical trial, Lind's experiment demonstrated the benefits of citrus (Vitamin C) on scurvy's victims, although the Royal Navy failed to implement Lind's recommendations for several decades, costing thousands of British seamen their health and/or lives. Only when fully implemented would British sailors come to be called Limeys because of the navy's provision of the citrus fruit to keep them seaworthy.
