The Saber-Toothed Tiger is also known as Smilodon, despite not being actually related to the tiger or any of the other modern cats for that matter. The saber-toothed tiger used to live mostly in the Americas, around 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago during the Pleistocene. There were three main species of the Smilodon: the Gracilis, fatalis and the populator, with most fossils of these being found in the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles. While being incredibly robust, more so than any other currently existing cat,the Smilodon was also incredibly graceful, with slender and fragile upper canines adapted for precision killing. Its lightest and smallest species was the Smilodon gracilis, which weighed 55 to 100 kilograms in weight, while Smilodon populator was the largest one of all, weighing around 220 to 436 kilograms and being also 120 centimeters in height. Smilodon used to hunt herbivores as their main prey, relying on camels and bisons for nourishment. On top of that, it was also a very successful predator even while in South America, and used to mostly live in closed habitats such as forest or bush where it could hunt and hide without being detected, especially since the foliage gave it enough coverage for ambushing prey. It's unknown if saber-toothed tigers were loners or if they were more social. • The Giant Ground Sloth or the megalonyx is the ancestor of the Sloth and one of the biggest prehistoric animals of all, on top of having one of the widest distributions of any North American ground sloth, being contiguous with most of the United States and even extending as far North as Alaska. The Megalonyx used to live during the Pleistocene epoch, becoming extinct during the Quaternary and living mostly 2.4 million years to 11,000 years ago. The most notorious species of megalonyx was the M. jeffersonii, which measured around 3 meters and also weighed up to 1,000 kilograms. One could argue that you could find a megalonyx in every rook and corner of ancient, prehistoric North America. The megalonyx was a well-known herbivore, though there has been fossil evidence that the ground sloth might have also included meat in their diets as a supplement. It's believed that they mostly scavenged carrion to obtain the nutrition that they lacked. Who would have thought that an innocent animal like the sloth would have a meaner bigger cousin like the megalonyx? • #SaberTooth #GiantSloth #Extinct • ► SUBSCRIBE Hit the bell:    / fivethings2018   • ► Facebook:   / fivethings2018   • ► Twitter:   / fivethings2018   • ► Blog: https://fivethings2018.blogspot.com/ • Music Credits: Jay Man - OurMusicBox: 'Dramatic Danger' •    • Suspense | Epic - Free Background Mus...   • Image(s) and/or Footage(s) used under license from Videoblocks.com and Shutterstock.com
