A hotspot is a combination of an infection, allergic reaction, and self trauma. It may start as a small wound, hive, sting, tight collar, scratch, allergic reaction to food, fleas, pollens, or grasses, then get itched or licked into a large wound. If the dog isn't too painful, you can wash the area with warm soap (baby shampoo or dawn) and warm water . Then you can apply antibiotic ointment and cortisone ointmant. If the wound is painful or making your pet sick, get it checked out by a vet. These are only suggestions for temporary treatment.
