Metallosis is a build up of metal, which kills the surrounding tissue causing necrosis. Symptoms of Metallosis include pain around the joint, swelling at the implant site, rash, and difficulty walking. Metallosis can lead to osteolysis, a condition where bone degeneration causes the implant to come loose. If an implant loosens, it could be quite painful and must be removed and replaced by a second surgery, known as revision surgery. Additionally, Metallosis can cause high levels of cobalt and chromium in the blood, which can lead to other health related issues including neurological issues.
