Happy Monday beautiful people. Yesterday, I entered a mashup remix contest. I took samples from 5 classic Armada Music tracks using DJ.Studio’s new stem separation tool. The tracks stems I pulled: • 🎧Self-Control (Eelke Kleijn Lee Cabrera) • ❖ Vocals • 🎧Burned with Desire (Armin Van Buuren) • ❖ Vocals ❖ Synths • 🎧Give It Up (The Good Men) • ❖ Vocals ❖ Drums • 🎧All Mine (D.O.D.) • ❖ Drums • 🎧1998 (Binary Finary) • ❖ Bass (1998 had the Cleanest Bassline, clean enough to re-pitch into new chord progressions!) • Over the last ~10 years, I’ve been releasing mashup remixes to keep leveling up my EDM Production skills constantly introducing new tricks. Ultimately, this mashup is a fun way to celebrate all the techniques I learned. Like deciding which tracks will sound good together, isolating stems, modifying chord progs, re-pitching vocals, creating non-existent harmonies, and weaving segways between verses/bridges/choruses, and mixing them all into a unified song. • THE BACKSTORY • In 2013, I accidentally struck harmonic gold when I mashed-up a EDM remix of Capital Cities’ “Safe and Sound” X Bastille’s “Pompeii” X Alice Deejay’s “Better Off Alone” — I posted it on reddit/r/mashup and a few Redditors just went nuts saying it was on another level and kept coming back to listen. I determined the reason is because I noticed the chord progressions of all 3 were in chord lockstep in a mindblowingly beautiful way so it just sounds like 1 song meant to be together. (Chord changes happen on the 3.5th beat of each bar!) • That’s in 2013 it was hella hard (perhaps impossible) to viably “extract” vocal/instrument/drum stems, and I was just using really basic EQing to isolate the unwanted sounds. Most DJs have heard this mashup — link to that reddit post here: / pompeii_safesound_betteroffalone_bastille_... • “One of the best mashups I've heard in a long while. • “Definitely in the higher echelon of quality in this sub. • That 2013 mashup was a key point of realizing that I needed to create a spreadsheet of the chord progressions in every song I want to try remixing, which brings the quality of the mashup seemingly, well, heavenly sounding. • I used this harmonic method with this mashup to bring it to a whole new level. If I don’t win this contest I will be super excited to hear what the actual winners will sound like.
