Full video text: • The UCC Skills Centre presents What is Academic Misconduct – Academic Integrity Skills. • Academic misconduct encompasses any action or attempt to gain an unfair academic advantage, usually known as cheating. • There are several different actions that fall under the umbrella of academic misconduct. • Plagiarism occurs when you use someone else’s ideas or information without acknowledgement. If you quote or paraphrase someone else’s work, don’t forget to cite it. The same applies to images, tables, and figures! • If you submit your own work again after it was submitted in another context, and you don’t cite this, it is considered self-plagiarism. • Breach of copyright: Using works protected by copyright without permission when a particular permission is required is against the law. This is particularly important if you are publishing your work! • When you work on something with others and present this joint effort as solely your own, without recognising the input of others, this is collusion. • Hiring someone to complete your work for you is known as contract cheating. • Falsification or misrepresentations: If you make up data, results, or other research outcomes, including documentation such as participant consent, and present it as real, you are falsifying your work. • Breach of ethical obligations: Make sure that you understand and follow research protocols, including ethics approvals. Failing to meet these standards can cause harm to others as well as the integrity of your work. • There are serious consequences for committing academic misconduct so make sure that you understand the University policies, as well as those of your department.
