AUG. 2020: NEW FOLLOW-UP VIDEO (setup, sweet spot, and samples) •    • Yamaha MG10XU Follow-up: Setup, Sweet...   • ORIGINAL REVIEW... • There are hundreds, if not thousands, of videos and reviews of the Yamaha MG line of mixers. By the time you find this video, you should have a good idea of the overall features, benefits, drawbacks, and specifications; so I'll not bore you with more of the same. • This is a terrific little mixer for singer/songwriters, duos, and 3-5 piece bands. I've paired mine with a Turbosound iP2000 tower array speaker for a portable and super clean sounding $1500 live sound system. It's perfect for rehearsals and playing smaller venues (say, up to 100 people), not to mention a great audio interface. • For simplicity's sake, let's say that all the basic stuff you reasonably expect (in terms of specs and features for the price you're paying) is present and accounted for in each of the mixers in this category (at least to some degree.) So what differentiates THIS mixer over similar units from Behringer, Mackie, Harbinger, Soundcraft, etc. - and why did I chose the Yamaha ??? • Here are the 7 reasons the MG10XU got my vote and purchase... • 1. It's a Yamaha (everything feels solid and professional) • 2. MG line has very clean preamps (especially for this size / price point) • 3. Balanced XLR stereo output (not just 1/4 jacks) • 4. Each of the (4) XLR input channels has HPF and 26db Pad buttons w/ 48v phantom power • 5. 1-knob inline compressor (only on first 2 channels, but high quality) • 6. On-board effects (no combo effects, but high sound quality, w/ 1-knob parameter control) • 7. Custom mic stand adapter (puts the mixer right at your fingertips as a performer) • (For setup, sweet spot and samples, checkout the follow-up video:    • Yamaha MG10XU Follow-up: Setup, Sweet...  ) • AUDIO INTERFACE: Though initially purchased for mixing live sound, this unit is a terrific 2-in/2-out (i.e. L/R stereo in/out ) USB audio interface, with (up to) 192 kHz / 24-bit conversion. So you'll also find plenty of home studio videos featuring this mixer. • To be fair, there are some things about this mixer I'm not crazy about. First, there are no combination effects - for example, no Chorus + Reverb, just one or the other. Next, I prefer sliders for a faster read and adjusting of the channel send levels, and sliders are available on the (slightly larger) MG10XUF board for $259, but there is no way to mount that board to a microphone stand. It would have been great to have 1-knob compressors on all (4) XLR channels, and sweepable mid-level eqs would have been incredible. If this unit had these features, it may have gone down in history as one of the defining small form factor mixers from Yamaha - maybe even of all brands and boards of all time - and I certainly would have paid $100 more for it. But it doesn't, so life goes on. • Finally, and for the record, I purchased a 12-channel Harbinger mixer first. (Bought on sale, thought it was a steal, returned it a few days later.) Then I personally tried all other boards in this category that I could put my hands on before buying the MG10XU. Yamaha is at the high end of the group in terms of price, and you get what you pay for IMO; though one could get by with a lower price board in many situations, and most people wouldn't know or care. Still, these are the reasons I chose the Yamaha MG10XU mixer over the others. • I hope this review has been helpful for you.
