Most people are tought that the Earth takes 24 hours to rotate once on its axis and that it spins 365 times per year (and 366 in a leap year). Unfortunately this isn't quite true. It actually rotates a little bit faster than that, and the difference between the length of the day and the true rotation period adds up to one whole extra rotation per year. In this video I will explain why this is the case, and what the consequences would be if the rotation period was exactly 24 hours. • You can verify that the information in this video is true for yourself by observing the position of the same star on successive nights. Record the exact time that a low-down easily identifyable star gets blocked out by the branch of a tree. Come back the following day, stand in exactly the same observing location and note the time again. The time difference should match the exact rotation period of the Earth and will be less than 24 hours. The true rotation period is called the sidereal day. • • Social Media: • Facebook:   / richardb1983   • Twitter:   / rb357   • Instagram:   / richardb_1983   • Google Plus: http://google.com/+RichardB1983
