How It Happens: • The skin contains a compound called 7-dehydrocholesterol, a type of cholesterol naturally present. • When exposed to UVB rays from the sun, 7-dehydrocholesterol absorbs the energy and transforms into pre-vitamin D3. • This pre-vitamin D3 undergoes a heat-driven transformation in the skin, converting it into vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). • • 2. Where It Goes Next: • Vitamin D3 is sent to the liver, where it is converted to 25-hydroxyvitamin D (calcidiol). • The kidneys then convert calcidiol to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol), the active form of Vitamin D. • 3. Factors That Affect Vitamin D Production: • Skin Color: Darker skin has more melanin, which reduces UVB penetration and slows Vitamin D synthesis. • Time of Day: Sunlight is strongest between 10 AM and 3 PM, making this the best time for Vitamin D production. • Geographic Location: People closer to the equator receive more UVB rays year-round. • Age: Older skin produces less Vitamin D. • 4.
