Gravitropism Experiment At Home

In this experiment, we learn about Gravitropism, which is a phenomenon where plant roots grow in the direction of gravity’s pull and plant shoots grow against it. Cells in the root tip can detect gravity, resulting in changes in the cells that make the root grow downwards. Gravitropism ensures that roots will grow down into the soil so it can find water and nutrients. • For this experiment, you will need some fast-growing seeds (cherry tomatoes, radish, basil), paper towels, sealable plastic bags, water, tape, and optionally, a ruler. • Pueblo Science is a Toronto-based charity dedicated to advancing science education and developing alternative teaching kits that are engaging and fun for children, while still being inexpensive, and can be locally reproduced by science educators in underserved communities around the world. • This video was made with the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
