When acetic acid, CH3COOH, which is a weak acid, is mixed with water, SOME of the H's come off of the COOH group of the molecule. They are given to nearby water molecules, and so two new ions are produced: CH3COO-, which is known as acetate, and H3O+, which is a water molecule with an extra H, and is known as the hydronium ion. • There is an equilibrium between all of these substances. • Check me out: http://www.chemistnate.com
