Chicken Layer-cages or, Battery Cages, are the subject of much controversy. This is because chicken farms around the world are filled with chickens that live their entire lives inside an over-crowded wire prison, known as a battery cage. • However, there are humane uses for the layer-style cages. I like to refer to ours as “Production Roosts”. Our chickens leave the roosts early in the morning as the sun rises. They eat, play and roam around all day, in freedom. As the sun sets, they gather at the edge of their play area and make a lot of noise, asking to return to their production roosts. • The production roosts sit high on a roost rack. The chickens feel safe during the night because they are high above the ground, surrounded by protective barriers. The production roost serves two purposes. One, it protects the chicken from predators and allows them to relax. Second, it allows the chicken’s poop to pass through the bottom of the roost to a processing catchment below, a donation to our chicken aquaponics experiment. Occasionally the roost will produce a freshly laid egg but mostly the hens lay their eggs during the day, outside their roosts. • If you would like to have a copy of the design plans for this build, follow the link below.
