Among those writings are the Nag Hammadi Manuscripts. • The term apocryphal (Greek: από, 'far' and κρυφος 'hidden'; Latin: apócryphus), which originally meant 'to hide away', and later became 'hidden', 'dark', has been used throughout the times to refer to some collections of sacred religious texts and writings that arose and emanated in Jewish or Christian contexts. With it, a number of books are qualified that the Christian Churches of the first centuries did not recognize as part of the Holy Scripture, but which are presented with names or characteristics that make them appear as if they were canonical books. • A different question is whether or not a certain writing is part of the Bible, whether or not it is considered an inspired book. When a certain writing or book deserves to be considered as part of the Bible, it is said to be canonical . The canon consists of a list of biblical writings. Catholics, non-Catholic Christians and Jews have different canons. When the canonical character of a writing is recognized late, it is said to be deuterocanonical. Sometimes a book can be simultaneously apocryphal and non-canonical. Such is the case with the Gospel of Saint Thomas. Neither Saint Thomas is really its author, nor is it considered to be part of the bible.
