The Battle of Issus in 333 BC was a pivotal clash between Alexander the Great and King Darius III of Persia, marking Alexander’s first direct confrontation with the Persian king. Darius, commanding an army of over 100,000 men, positioned his forces near the Pinarus River in a narrow coastal plain, limiting his numerical advantage. Alexander, leading around 40,000 troops, seized the opportunity and launched a daring attack. He personally led the Companion Cavalry on a decisive charge against the Persian left flank, while his infantry attacked the massive Persian forces in the center. As the Macedonian phalanx advanced, Darius panicked and fled the battlefield, leaving his army in disarray. The Persians were routed, suffering heavy casualties, and Darius’ family, including his mother, wife, and daughters, were captured. This stunning victory shattered Persian morale, solidified Alexander’s dominance in Asia Minor, and paved the way for his conquest of the Persian heartland. • 'Battle of Issus' is the sixth of sixteen songs that form the 'Alexander' Rock Opera, the first historical rock opera project I have completed.
