How snakes is a series where I give you quick explanations of what makes snakes tick. Check out how snakes poop and pee in this episode! • Notes: • It is important to know that snakes have almost all the same main organs as humans, but they are void of a urinary bladder. This causes snakes to expel semi-solid uric acid(like birds and lizards), instead of Urea. The other component of snake poop is the fecal matter. Combined the snake expels this poop through the cloaca. The Cloaca is the only opening that serves the intestinal, urinary and genital tract. Snakes also mate and lay their eggs through the Cloaca. Snakes tend to poop infrequently. This is because of their eating habits. Snakes of the family, coludridae will usually go to the bathroom within 2 days and many viper species take 3-7 days. However, large bodied snakes may differ. Researchers have shown in field tests that a Blood Python held its poop for 386 days, while a Gaboon Viper didn’t poop for 420 days. Scientists are not sure why they hold there poop so long but it is thought that it could be to help defend them from predation or give them better leverage when they strike. My theory is that since snakes are ambush hunters and must go unnoticed, these snakes hold their poop so that they don't give up their position. • / portcitypythons • Instagram @portcitypythons • Twitter @portcitypythons • http://www.Portcitypythons.com • Sources: • • Ever wondered how snakes poo? • • CHECK OUT OUR PODCAST: / joe-phelan-194475994 • Some of my favorite reptile supplies! • HerpStat Thermostat: http://amzn.to/2qjG9SI • Sani Chip: http://amzn.to/2ETfrUt • Maxima Vet Cleaner: http://amzn.to/2CRqTiJ • ReptiChip: http://amzn.to/2CSIYwL • What Camera do I use? : http://amzn.to/2CRCmi8
