Disney and Pixar are known to be incredibly collaborative in their storytelling process which means landing on that perfect draft of a movie doesn’t tend to happen in the writing stage. A lot doesn’t make it past storyboarding, and some things find themselves in the trailers or documentaries that never made it on screen - we’re looking at you, Turning Red. A goofy joke was swapped and a weird floppy protest left behind. In Encanto, some pretty wild stuff was cut. Like Isabela’s weird boyfriend who was covered in animal urine. We have to give credit where credit is due - the artists aren’t afraid of ‘going there’ and then reeling it back in. But there’s so much more. Mirabel had a heart to heart with the magicless dads. The ending was completely different and totally chaotic. Luisa almost didn’t have dancing donkeys! (We think). Luca’s band of bros was three for a long time and their first interactions with humans were through a carnival. Or was it on their island? Luca had a super creepy dream that is way too disturbing and we are shook it made it to the storyboarding phase. Raya and the last dragon had a butt joke cut and a creepy Druun design. ONWARD cut out a third wheel character too, combining the roles of Barley and this third character. It actually had a completely different plot for a while. The brothers both loved magic and were getting along and it was super wholesome BUT the stakes weren’t high enough and so Ian had to become a magic skeptic and ruin all the fun.
