Located north of Atlanta in the north Georgia mountains, Ellijay was founded almost two hundred years ago by the Cherokee people. The original name for the town was elatseyi or “new ground.” Downtown Ellijay features many restaurants, shops, and the Gilmer County courthouse. The original county courthouse built over one hundred and fifty years ago made Ellijay the county seat, or government center of Gilmer County.
