Digestive system of pigeon: • Alimentary canal • • Foregut or stomodeum • • Midgut or mesenteron • • Hindgut or proctodaeum • Digestive glands • • Buccal gland • • Gastric glands • • Liver • • Pancreas • • Intestinal glands • Physiology of digestion: • • Food- Grainivorous • • Ingestion- quickly picked up with the help of beak, lubricated in buccal cavity by mucus with the help of tongue and swallowed without mastication. • • Digestion: • Grains are conducted through oesophagus by peristalsis • Crop stores the food grains which also undergo softening and bacterial breakdown. • Food is chemically hydrolysed by the peptic enzyme of gastric juice. • Mechanical churned in the gizzard by muscular contractions of wall of gizzard • Now food is partially digested and acidic, chyme • Passes through the pylorus and passes into the duodenum • In intestine, bile juice of liver provides alkaline medium after neutralising the acidity of chyme. • The proteins, polysaccharides and fats are chemically broken into amino acids, mono-sugars and fatty acids and glycerol by proteolytic, amylolytic and lipolytic enzymes of pancreatic in intestinal juice • • Absorption • Mainly occurs through ileum in which diffusible microbiomolecules like wate, minerals, amino acids, monosugars, glycerol, etc. • • Egestion • In rectum, more water is absorbed and undigested food changes into faeces which are temporarily stored in rectum. • Subdivided cloaca further increases the conservation of water. • The faeces are finally Egested through cloacal aperture. • #Columbalivia • #digestivesystemofpigeon • #bsc2ndyearzoology
