On October 29 at 14h (CET), Dirk Geeraerts will give his valedictory lecture, entitled Meaning and method (and why it matters beyond linguistics). The major part of professor Geeraerts’ research has been devoted to the development of a framework for the description of lexical meaning and semantic variation. (For the full extent of this research programme, see the overview and bibliography [https://www.arts.kuleuven.be/ling/qlv...] compiled at the occasion of his 65th birthday in October 2020.) His valedictory lecture will focus on the methodological issues behind that conceptual and descriptive framework, with special emphasis on the absence of fully validated methods for identifying differences of meaning-in-use. The talk will not just discuss this methodological underdetermination of meaning as a technical issue for linguistics, but will also explore its broader societal consequences: between the extremes of an activist hermeneutics of suspicion on the one hand, and on the other hand the hermeneutic agnosticism of leaving meaning to the machine, is there room for an interpretative stance that is circumstantial, conjectural, careful?
