Today I will summarize Proverbs chapter 25, which contains 25 of Solomon’s proverbs. This chapter is slightly different than the previous ones. While these are still Solomon’s proverbs, these were added to the book of Proverbs numerous years after the first 24 chapters, during the days of King Hezekiah, king of Judah. • Solomon wrote: God loves to hide things for people to find. Kings love to search things out and find hidden treasures. No one can measure the heights of heaven, the depths of the earth, or the heart of a king. Burn away dross and silver will be even finer. Remove all the wicked people from government, and the king’s throne will be established in righteousness. Don’t think of yourself higher than you should. Be invited to stand with great men. Don’t invite yourself. A prince is persuaded by persistence. Don’t give up asking for what you desire. A faithful messenger is like snow in harvest. He refreshes his master’s soul. • Solomon continued: a soft tongue breaks bones. A word softly spoken is more effective than brute force. Do not eat too much honey. Too much honey is like a man searching for his own glory. It is sickening. Confidence in a worthless unfaithful man is like a broken tooth or a sprained ankle. Do not spend too much time at a neighbor or friend’s house. If you do, he will begin to hate you being there. Do not sing happy songs to people who are sad. If your enemy is hungry give him something to eat. If he is thirsty give him something to drink. You will shame him for being your enemy in this way. Who knows, perhaps he will no longer be your enemy after that. • The most important verses in this chapter are Proverbs 25:4 and 5 which state, ‘Take away the dross from the silver, and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer. Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness..’ • The thing I think the Lord wants us to understand after reading this chapter is that He loves to hide things for people to find. He wants a good king to remove all the wicked people in his government. God wants people to be humble and speak softly. The Lord wants us not to spend too much time in a neighbor or friend’s home or sing happy songs to people who are sad. And God wants us to be kind even to our enemies and feed them if they are hungry. Perhaps your enemy will turn out to be your friend in the end. • Do you do good things to your enemies? Do you spend too much time at your neighbor or friend’s house? Are you following the good advice of the other Proverbs? Are you one of God’s children? Repent for your sin and turn to Jesus for salvation. Jesus humbled himself and died on a cross to pay for your sin, and the Father raised Jesus from the dead. God said if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and if you believe in your heart that the Father raised Jesus from the dead, you would be saved.
