The Baroque Period lasted from approximately 1600 to 1750, arriving after the Renaissance period, and followed by the Classical period. The baroque period is traditionally split into three overlapping mini periods, the Early Baroque from around 1580 to 1650, the Middle Baroque from around 1630 to 1700, and the Late Baroque from around 1680 to 1750. • There were several significant musical developments during the Baroque period. Firstly, the use of common practice tonality became the norm, where pieces were written in a particular key. Secondly, composers began to experiment more with the use and sound of different instrumentation, thus creating the orchestra, albeit smaller in size than the later classical and romantic ensembles. The Figured Bass came into use too, as a simpler, quicker way of notating the chord progression of a piece of music. • Baroque music was a tool for expression and communication, with complex, polyphonic textures a common occurrence, as well as the expectation that performers would be skilled improvisers of both solo and accompaniment lines. • Key composers of the Baroque period included J.S Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, Monteverdi, Purcell, and Scarlatti. • This channel is advert free and will remain so.
