They act as shock absorbers, allowing the spine to flex, bend, and twist. They are made up of two parts, a very firm outer shell, and a very soft inner section. Over time, as the disc ages, or sometimes due to trauma like an accident or lifting something too heavy, the firm outer shell starts to not be so firm any more.
