What is a heterotroph? • Heterotroph examples • In this video, I would like to talk about different types of heterotrophs • Heterotrophs are individuals that cannot generate their own energy but rely on others for their energy. • Although all heterotrophs cannot practice photosynthesis there are several different types • Up first is a herbivore • These individuals like plants Cows and zebras are examples. • With carnivores, when it is time for a meal they like other animals. Common examples are alligators and lions. • Omnivores are not picky and like plants and animals for their energy. Most humans are omnivores. • Next are decomposers or recyclers. I will talk about three types of decomposers • Scavengers, Saprotrophs, and detrivores • Scavengers are heterotrophs that look for once-living plants and animals found in their habitat. Common examples are vultures, crows, and striped hyenas. Once a plant or animal is has expired, scavengers move in for a tasty meal. • • Saprotrophs are individuals like bacteria and fungi that feed on organic material either using anaerobic decomposition in which oxygen is not present or with aerobic decomposition which uses oxygen. • Common decomposers are bacteria, and fungi, • Detrivores are individuals that feed on plants and animals. Detrivores are different than saprotrophs because they have the ability to ingest small portions of organic material. • Examples include earthworms, slugs, and millipedes • • For additional information on heterotrophs: • http://www.moomoomath.com/types-of-he... • • Heterotroph Examples • Updated Version • • Heterotroph Examples
