To mark the year of the dragon, a 22-meter golden dragon will preside over this year’s Taiwan Lantern Festival, which kicks off in Tainan on Feb. 24. As in previous years, small handheld lanterns for children will be given away at the event. This year, the souvenir is shaped like a dragon’s head, with a mouth that can open and close. Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che says he expects the festival to draw a record number of visitors. • Light shoots out from a golden dragon. At this year’s Taiwan Lantern Festival in Tainan, the centerpiece will be inspired by the flying dragons at Tainan’s Grand Mazu Temple. A model was unveiled on Wednesday, but the actual lantern will be much bigger at 22 meters tall. Officials hope the event will draw international tourists to Taiwan. • Huang Wei-che • Tainan mayor • I am one of many people who will see Tainan turn 400 years old. Together we march toward this milestone. Tainan’s 400th anniversary is an honor for Taiwan. I hope that the Taiwan Lantern Festival in Tainan, which will be held from Feb. 24 to March 10, will attract a record number of visitors, thanks to efforts made by the Tourism Administration. I think that visitor numbers for the Taiwan Lantern Festival will hit new highs both for domestic and international tourists. • Organizers also unveiled the hand lanterns that will be given to children. This year, the fierce and regal dragon has been reimagined as a cute pet. Its mouth can open and close to hold small toys. It can be carried by hand or worn around the neck. • Wang Kwo-tsai • Transport minister • We have two exhibition areas this year, one near the High Speed Rail and one in Anping District. This year will also be Tsai Ing-wen’s last time taking part in the festival as president. She’s participated in every past edition of the Taiwan Lantern Festival. So next time she’ll be attending in a personal capacity. • After 16 years away, the Taiwan Lantern Festival will return to Tainan this year, coinciding with the city’s 400th anniversary. Mayor Huang Wei-che says he expects record-breaking visitor numbers. • For more Taiwan news, tune in: • Sun to Fri at 9:30 pm on Channel 152 • Tue to Sat at 1 am on Channel 53 • #台灣新聞 #TaiwanNews #民視新聞 #FTV新聞 #Taiwan
