LECTURE 14: • Here, brittle failure criteria are presented and explained in the context of stress-strain curves. The same logic that allowed the derivation of Ductile Coulomb Mohr (DCM) is shown to apply for Brittle Coulomb Mohr (BCM). The Modified Mohr (MM) criterion is shown to better represent certain experimental data. The proper usage of the various failure criteria is explained based on conditions such as material properties and analysis goals. An example involving a pressure vessel with additional applied load is presented. Axial, bending, torsion, hoop, longitudinal, and transverse shear stresses are found. These stresses are combined and in-plane principal stresses are found. These are used to calculate BCM and MM factors of safety and plot a load line. The load line is compared to the BCM and MM failure loci to verify consistency with the computed factors of safety. • Playlist for MEEN361 (Advanced Mechanics of Materials): •    • MEEN 361: Advanced Mechanics of Mater...   • Playlist for MEEN462 (Machine Element Design): •    • MEEN 462: Machine Element Design   • This lecture was presented on January 12, 2018.
