There is literally no difference. However, some people find it easier to purl. Also, if you purl tighter/looser you can correct your gauge by switching to reverse garter stitch. Otherwise, you might as well just knit. • Same applies to reverse garter stitch selvages. You can always purl the first last two stitches of every row.
