The 40Ar/39Ar technique is an important method in Earth and Planetary sciences which allow precisely dating rocks… Wanna know how it works? • • This is the technique I truly built my career on. What I learned right away is that a precise and more importantly, an accurate age for a rock is critical to understand the story it tells and the 40Ar/39Ar technique can do both with a permil precision (e.g. 4531 ± 6 Ma eruption on Vesta or 14.81 ±0.02 for the Ries Crater). In this paper, we explain what this technique is all about and we provide a set of best-practice guidelines when reporting and interpreting 40Ar/39Ar data. This paper was published earlier this year in GSA bulletin with a vast list of co-authors involving a large part of the Ar community.
