Biblical commentaries serve as a written and systematic interpretation of Bible verses and passages. Among those with significant influence over the years are those of Matthew Henry. Born in England in 1662, his father was a Presbyterian minister. • That same year, an “Act of Conformity” by the Church of England began administering the ordaining of bishops and priests. It was predicated on barring Presbyterians from any official ministry in the church, an act that also prevented Matthew Henry from pursuing his own life-long aspirations as a preacher. • Instead, he studied law and became a popular writer of biblical commentaries.
