Luckily, it’s not that hard. Today I’m going to show you how to install butcher block so your countertops look modern and professional... • First, you’ll need to make a couple key measurements. Measure the depth of your cabinet, and add in however much overhang you’d like. Then measure the length of the countertop, adding in any overhang you might need. • Next, cut the butcher block to the length you want if you need something different than the length you purchased. • Before you install the countertop, sand the edge in order to ease the corners and smooth them out. • Next, we want to prepare the cabinets for the butcher block. For open top cabinets, install blocking across the cabinet width, approximately ¼ to ½ inch from the top of the cabinet. You’ll want to pre-drill pilot holes through the blocking and fasten it to the cabinet with wood screws. • For solid-top cabinets, install furring strips across the length of the cabinet and bond the strips to it using construction adhesive. • Drill ¼ inch or ½ inch holes into the blocking or the top of the solid-top cabinets, depending. • Apply a bead of “flexible” construction adhesive where the butcher block is going to sit. • Now, position the countertop on the cabinet. • Drill a small diameter pilot hole into the underside of the countertop by drilling through the larger holes you’ve previously drilled in the cabinet itself. Just be careful not to drill through the top of the butcher block. • Secure the countertop to the cabinet with wood screws and washers, going up through your pilot holes using a screw short enough not to go through the top of the butcher block. • Tighten the screws until the countertop fits snugly. • All that’s left to do is finish your countertop as desired. You should treat it with butcher block oil conditioner, or your preferred varnish. • That’s it!
